People become addicted to drugs and alcohol for any number of reasons, especially if they lack the will to do something about the issues they are facing and find solutions to their predicaments. Most people who are addicted to alcohol and drugs have immediate concerns that need to be addressed before the addiction becomes more severe, and this is where a rehab facility plays an important role. Depending on the preference of the patient, family members and friends can choose either a twelve-step rehab program or a non twelve-step program. There is a significant difference between these two options, especially if the patient has certain standards when it comes to religion. If the patient is religious and would want treatment based on spiritual teachings then a twelve-step rehab program may be the best option. Non 12 step rehab programs on the other hand do not offer religion-based treatment but rather focuses on the medical and holistic needs of the addict. This constitutes finding solutions to underlying problems through logical and scientific treatments.
In a non twelve-step rehab setting, the patient is either asked to undergo short-term therapy or long-term treatment. The patient is assessed prior to recommending the time frame of the whole recovery process, with patients who are deeply addicted to drugs or alcohol being recommended for long-term rehab. Long-term non 12 step rehabs usually offer detoxification programs aside from the regular treatments. This is to ensure that drug and alcohol residues are completely flushed out of a patient’s body before therapy begins.
